I Remember

A Letter to a Scared Child

Posted by ixysledgehammer on June 24, 2026

I remember the darkness,

I remember the fear.

I remember feeling helpless

That someone was not here.

When I look back

All I see is black.

It doesn't matter how many years pass,

I hear your screams as well as my own.

I remember the tears,

I remember the fears,

That we would be alone,

That no one was coming through those doors.

Sometimes I think I'm still that scared little girl.

Sometimes I just want to be there for her.

I don't want her to be afraid,

I don't want her to be scared any longer.

But it is too late for me to be a martyr.

She gave me these memories

And I hold them close.

Though they obscure the light,

I will try to overcome her shadows.

I remember the feeling of despair,

That no one would grow to love this broken fool.

I remember the impossible task

Of making myself understood.

I remember wishing she'd never made it out of the womb.

And the emptiness of every bloody wound.

How times have changed from there to here...

I still walk blindfolded, but I no longer walk alone.

Oh, how I wish I could tell that scared little girl.

I wish I could tell her something.

I'd tell her that I've kept her memories safe.

They aren't as terrifying anymore.

My heart is stronger now.

I would give her a hug,

And unlock the door.

I would show her the love,

That no one had before.

If only I could see that little girl now.
