The Symphony in the Silence

There really is sound in the silence... You need only open your eyes, and your heart. Written for a friend who is completely deaf.

The Symphony in the Silence

The quiet solitude broken
By the waves crashing on the shore
A symphony in the silence
A harmonious, never ending chord

My mind is filled with visions
Of surf beating upon the sand
My eyes closed yet I see
The musicians of natures band

As far as one can hear
Up and down the empty shores
Nature plays on and on
Her captivating musical scores

The calm forever broken
By her unrelenting rhythm
I listen to her singing
The words of a voiceless hymn

No words ever spoken
No sound a man can make
Can e’er replace the beauty
Of the resonance of natures wake

I listen, oh how I listen
To the story being told
Of how the surf and sand are one
The story now unfolds

The magnificent life within the ocean
Meets the finite mortality of the sand
And for a brief moment there is fluidity
There where the water meets the land

The sand and water mingle
In an erotic lovers dance
Yet then the water leaves the sand
And it comes to a halting stance

But… the shape of the surf
Has forever been changed
That short intimate dance
Has left the sand re-arranged

No longer is the sand fluid
Its life passed away
But only for a brief moment
Another wave comes this way

Such is the life within us all
For moments on end we are quick
No one dares to make a move
Our bodies cold and thick

But at a moments notice
A silent symphony breaks out
Someone touches our lifeless form
As the crashing waves do shout

We move for a moment
The water shaping our beings
Then suddenly as quick as it began
It comes to an immediate end

The silent symphony continues
Awaiting the next verse
Once again we are still
An interminable curse

The waves crashing on the shore
The surf and the sand still dance
The sound of it all unceasing
This symphony in the silence
